Incorporated in November 2008, ShetlandOrganics Community Interest Company is a company limited by guarantee, and has an "asset lock" that ensures assets and profits are retained within the CIC for community purposes.
The beneficiaries shall be the Organic producers (farmers, crofters and growers) and processors throughout the Shetland Islands through being Members of the Company.
The Company is concentrating on the production of woollen goods under 'WoolMatters' using purely Organic Native Shetland Wool, giving full certification and traceability from producer to finished garment.
There are currently five Members, farmers and crofters, breeding organic native Shetland sheep, who combine their production of fleeces to send the wool to the spinning mills for processing into yarns.
There are just two organic certified spinning mills in UK: The Natural Fibre Company in Launceston, Cornwall and New Lanark Heritage Mill in Scotland.
